To Fix Device Harddisk DR0 DR1 DR2 DR3 has a “bad block” Error in Event Viewer Event ID 7

If you have the above error in your event viewer and noticed that the error message will appear consistently every day or weekly, there is a high chance that your existing storage medium (typically a hard disk) could be having bad sectors which indirectly means it is starting to fail.

As more sectors on the hard disk starts to fail, the error might start to appear every minute. (Refer to screenshot below)

You might have noticed that the “DR#”  \Device\Harddisk1\DR1 might be different for your scenario. It is perfectly normal as it indicates different hard disk drive.

You could have multiple hard disk in the system and which to pinpoint the correct hard disk. To do so, take note of the DR#, in the above example, it is DR2 (highlighted in blue)

  1. Method 1: Using Disk Management
  2. Open up “disk management” (To do so, type in “disk management” after clicking on the windows button
  3. From there, you will be able to see which drive is giving you problem.
  4. Once the drive number is detected, you may then proceed to copy out the file ASAP as there is no guarantee how long the device can last.

Method 2: Diskpart

  1. click on the windows button again, typically located at the bottom left. and type “cmd”
  2. a black window will appear, with a blinking underscroll cursor. Type in “diskpart” and the “User Account Control” might appear. Allow and another window will appear.
  3. Type in “list disk” and you will be able to see which disk is generating the “the device \Device\Harddisk1\DR# has a “bad block” error.

 

Others: During the copying process, you might have noticed that certain portions of the transfer might reach 0 Kbps or might stalled. that is perfectly normal if you are trying to copy out from a potentially failing storage medium.
