Understand How Synology Remote Access Works using Synology Quickconnect

Synology Quickconnect is a service provided free of charge which allows you to easily remote access and connect to  your diskstation anywhere in the world. All is make possible even without you having any technical, network knowledge and without the need to setup any port forwarding in your network router.

When Quickconnect is setup successfully, the  synology nas will keep a “live” connection to the quickconnect server. This live connection allows any device to perform a synology remote access anywhere in the world to connect directly to your NAS, with your unique synology quickconnect ID.

Take note that quick connect ID only works well when you are using Synology Apps. Eg DS File, DS Video, etc.

Enabling Synology Quickconnect ID For Synology Remote Access – Security Concerns

With QuickConnect, you will be able to perform synology remote access and easily retrieve your data. However, this means that others can do perform the same task too!

There are some ways to mitigate this issue.

Choose a long synology quick connect ID!

With a long ID, it will be harder for others to guess your unique details. If they cant find out your quick connect ID, they cant connect to you!

Choose a strong and long password

Even if they manage to find out your quickconnect ID, it is useless if they are sign in.

Select a long, yet easy for you to remember password, so that you do not forget the password.

Disable the default Admin Account

Anyone who has setup enough synology NAS will know that the “Admin” is the administrator account. By disabling the default admin account, you make it harder for them to guess your administrator login credential.

Limit QuickConnect Permission

Open Control Panel > Quickconnect > Advanced (images below) And untick the permission you do not require.

Eg, if you do not need remote feature for DSM, disable it. If you only require on the go access, enable only Mobile Application.

** Wording is faint as quickconnect wasn’t enabled **

Limit User Account Permission

Control Panel >User > And select the user > Click on “Edit” > “Applications

If a particular user does not use any application, eg synology drive remotely, do disable that feature for security purposes.
